We closed out February at Lake Tahoe with the yearly SnowFest. The festival seems to have attracted the snow clouds to produce March’s epic blizzard!
The area received an average of 8 feet of snow, with more on the way this week. Forecasters are calling for an additional 6″ to 12″ of snow above 4,000 ft. and the highest peaks could see up to two feet of fresh snow.
By midweek, the clouds disappear and the skies will be sunny, with temperatures in the 50s. This week may officially kick off Lake Tahoe’s epic spring skiing season. Due to the new snow, Palisades Tahoe recently announced that they are extending their season to July 2, 2024.
Spring skiing and boarding at Lake Tahoe are popular for several reasons:
Weather: In spring, the weather in Lake Tahoe tends to be milder with longer daylight hours. This means skiers can enjoy more comfortable temperatures, softer snow conditions, and possibly even some sunny days.
Snow Conditions: Despite the warmer weather, Lake Tahoe typically still has a good base of snow in the spring due to its high elevation and ample snowfall during the winter months. As the temperatures rise, the snow often becomes softer and more forgiving, making for enjoyable skiing and riding conditions.
Terrain Variety: With a variety of ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, there’s terrain suitable for skiers of all levels. In the spring, some higher elevation terrain may still offer powder skiing, while lower elevation slopes might have softer, slushier snow more conducive to cruising.
Events and Activities: Many ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area host events and activities during the spring months, such as live music, competitions, and festivals. These events can add to the overall experience and provide additional entertainment off the slopes. The Winter WonderGrass Festival at Palisades Tahoe will be held from April 5th to 7th in 2024. Fewer Crowds: It used to be that skiing in Lake Tahoe wrapped up at the end of February. The SnowFest celebration was a way of promoting the awesome spring skiing conditions at Lake Tahoe. However, as the peak ski season winds down, ski resorts in Lake Tahoe tend to be less crowded in the spring compared to the busier winter months. This means shorter lift lines and more space to enjoy the slopes.
Scenery: The breathtaking scenery of Lake Tahoe is a highlight of skiing in the area during any season. In the spring, skiers and riders can enjoy views of the sparkling lake and surrounding mountains while skiing and riding down the slopes. The expansive, blue skies and brilliant sunlight are truly something to behold. Additionally, many people dress up in costume during spring skiing.
