Castle Peak, situated north of Donner Pass near the Sierra Nevada, is one of the most iconic hiking destinations in the North Lake Tahoe area. Renowned for its distinctive craggy summit and panoramic views, this trail offers a challenging yet rewarding adventure for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Here’s an in-depth look at what you can expect when hiking Castle Peak.
Because of its high elevation, portions of this hike can be covered in snow until early July. Castle Peak was formed from the glaciated remains of an old volcano, overlying the granite mountain.
A few seasonal springs are interlaced at the seam between the volcanic rock and granite. Additionally, you will find meadows and wildflowers in the early summer.
Once you reach the summit, you can see all the way to Mount Diablo in the Bay Area, with views of the Coast Range to the west. In the north, you can see Mt. Lassen, and to the southeast, you can see Mt. Rose and the mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe.
Because of the sun exposure on the trail to Castle Peak, it is important to wear sunscreen and a hat. Start your hike early in the day, and be sure to carry plenty of water. With an 1800 foot gain in elevation, this hike is considered moderate to challenging.
